In 2016, inspired by his father’s battle with kidney and lung cancer, Michael launched a fundraising initiative called Stroke Out Cancer with donations based on how many miles he swam for our Providence High School varsity swim team. Proceeds go to the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund and the Child Cancer Fund, which help families of children who have cancer, and Wolfson Children’s Hospital’s asthma research program, which helped Michael when he suffered from asthma in his younger years.
The first year, he swam 207 miles in three months and raised $50,000, including a matching donation from Wolfson. This swimming season, which runs through November, Michael hopes to raise $75,000 by enlisting other area high school swim teams to have fundraising events and by getting more involved in the community.
Since the new season began, he’s already racked up about 90 miles in the pool, while also serving as sophomore class president, an editor of the school yearbook and participating in several service clubs.
